It was a very messy journey, but it set Zombie's directorial career up for success from that point on, with nine feature films and counting in his filmography to date. Like other cult classics, House of 1,000 Corpses has also benefited from everyone being online all the time. “It’s gotten really big,” observed Cherry, a costume designer who cosplays as Baby Firefly, and once played her in a haunted house at Zombie’s annual Great American Nightmare scarefest.

Some of these actors were a major part of the movie, present for the majority of its runtime. But whether they formed a huge part of the movie's machinery or acted as a single cog, each of these actors was part of something special. Their legacies will forever live on in House of 1000 Corpses, and in the hearts of horror fans everywhere. The other two films in the Firefly trilogy aren't even the only sequels Zombie has gone on to make.

While these genres might not seem to blend at first glance, none of that mattered to Zombie, who is a huge fan of the legendary comic. "I was a big Marx Brothers fan when I was a little kid because their movies were always on TV," Zombie remarked in 2016. "A Night at the Opera, in particular, was on a lot. So I discovered the Marx Brothers movies around the same time I discovered any movie, really." He is the father of Baby Firefly (who he is fiercely protective of) and possibly Otis B. Driftwood, although this is uncertain. He runs a roadside attraction called Captain Spaulding's Museum of Monsters and Madmen near Ruggsville, Texas, which includes a murder ride detailing the acts of several serial killers.

How a Short Film Inspired Blumhouse's Horror Film Night Swim

His film career began similarly, with blaxploitation roles and supporting turns in Roger Corman and Jack Hill’s horror, noir, and sci-fi adding up to more than 50 film appearances. George Lucas’ THX 1138 and Sean Connery’s penultimate James Bond outing Diamonds Are Forever are standouts among films like Blood Bath, Galaxy of Terror, and Beyond Atlantis. Others, like Moseley, Karen Black, and Sid Haig, spent years running what McClelland characterized as an “underground publicity tour” simply by going to horror conventions and signing autographs. McClelland, who estimated he goes to three or four cons a year himself, would see them frequently, set up behind booths and interacting with delighted fans. That’s exactly why it appealed to McClelland, who went out and bought the DVD—“the very first one, where it was just a cardboard flip cover without a clasp”—as soon as he could.

Robert Bartleh Cummings, more commonly known as Rob Zombie, came to public prominence in the early '90s as the frontman of the heavy metal band White Zombie. He went on to become a successful solo act, releasing albums under the name of, of course, Rob Zombie. Now that Zombie has had his hands on countless titles, making him a mainstay in the horror movie genre, fans might be surprised to learn that House of 1000 Corpses was his directorial debut.

The movie ends with Denise screaming in horror and the words "The End?" displayed before the end credits. Later that night, the three remaining teenagers are dressed as rabbits and taken out to an abandoned well. Mary attempts to run away, but is tracked down and stabbed to death by Baby moments later. A book’s total score is based on multiple factors, including the number of people who have voted for it and how highly those voters ranked the book. Despite investing millions in the film, it was ultimately decided that Universal was not going to release "House of 1000 Corpses," and the studio dropped the movie completely. In that same AV Club piece, Zombie expressed that the upside of the film he had made wouldn't have been enough to justify the publicity risk Universal would have been taking.

He quickly began marshaling people over to his apartment to hold screenings. When Zombie released a sequel, 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects, McClelland led a group of more than a dozen friends to the theater. House of 1,000 Corpses hit theaters and landed in second place at the domestic box office in its first week, behind only Jack Nicholson’s Anger Management. “Lionsgate made back all their money the first day,” Zombie crowed to the A.V. Now terrified that House of 1,000 Corpses would be slapped with an NC-17 rating—a box-office kiss of death—the studio asked Zombie to tone the movie down.

Since this debut, Zombie has gone on to make two Halloween movies, The Lords of Salem, 31, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, The Devil's Rejects, 3 from Hell, and other projects. The studio completed a theatrical trailer for the film, which was shown in theaters and prior to the Universal ride created by Zombie.[18] Zombie later received a call for a meeting with Stacey Snider, head of Universal. Zombie claimed that many urged him to scrap the film following the fallout with Universal, though he continued to search for a new distributor. House of 1000 Corpses is a 2003 American black comedy horror film[4][5] written, co-scored, and directed by Rob Zombie in his directorial debut, and the first film in the Firefly film series. It stars Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, Sheri Moon, Karen Black, Rainn Wilson, Chris Hardwick, Tom Towles, Erin Daniels, Jennifer Jostyn, Walton Goggins, and Dennis Fimple in his final role.

To fans, however, it's one of Rob Zombie's masterpieces, and the film that launched his career in horror. Despite his success in mainstream rock music, Rob Zombie had always loved horror films and had his sights set on directing. Leading up to his feature directorial debut, he had helmed several music videos and had even had some close calls with other films. Zombie actually had, at one point, been attached to write and direct the third entry in "The Crow" franchise, though that didn't come to pass. But around the time everyone was freaking out about Y2K, Zombie got hooked up with the folks at Universal Pictures.

The Devil's Rejects is a 2005 American black comedy horror film[3] written, produced and directed by Rob Zombie, and is the second film in the Firefly film series, serving as a sequel to his 2003 film House of 1000 Corpses. This was only a couple of years removed from the tragic Columbine shooting, and members of the U.S. Government began calling into question the violent movies being marketed to children. For those that need a refresher, Zombie makes incredibly violent movies, so much so that "1000 Corpses" originally received an NC-17 rating and had to be edited down significantly to get it down to an R.

“We just assumed she would get out of the way,” Zombie remarks on the film’s DVD commentary. House of 1,000 Corpses draws heavily from the horror canon that Zombie feasted on growing up in the sleepy town of Haverhill, Massachusetts, in the years before he went off to New York City to found White Zombie and become a heavy metal god. Captain Spaulding appears on the news coverage of the murder trials of the Firefly Family. Despite widespread protest, Otis B. Driftwood, Vera-Ellen "Baby" Firefly, and Captain Spaulding are all found guilty and sentenced to death. In a prison interview, Spaulding maintains his claim that he is innocent, and was railroaded by the system for being an average clown.

Wydell raided the whorehouse, taking the three fugitives back to the Firefly house, where he tortured them. Captain Spaulding had a picture of George Wydell stapled to his chest, while the others were tortured in a similar manner. Spaulding and the others were saved by Tiny, a family member who wasn't caught because he had been away from the house. When they tried to get away, they realized the police had blocked the road to arrest them. Knowing that one way or another they gonna die, the rest of the Firefly family drove directly at the blockage and opened fire at the cops only to be shot and wounded. About one year after the events of the first film, Sheriff John Quincy Wydell, brother of George, led a police raid on the Firefly house.

Frequently, to gas himself up before an appearance, he’ll watch House of 1,000 Corpses. “It was kind of this crazy carnival going on at Universal in the backlot,” Gibbs said, adding that at night, the crew would climb up the hill “and party at the Psycho house.” Then they’d crash, wake up, and do it all over again. Zombie had just gone solo when Universal decided to give him a blank check and the run of their backlot. Riding high off the success of his latest album, Hellbilly Deluxe, he was designing a scare maze for the studio’s Halloween Horror Nights when an executive turned to him and asked if he had any movie ideas.
